VTT MIKES is specialised in measurement science and technology. As the National Metrology Institute of Finland, VTT MIKES is responsible for the implementation and development of the national measurement standards system and realisation of the SI units in Finland. VTT MIKES designates other National Standards Laboratories in Finland. The number of designated institutes is 5. VTT MIKES research area has 65 employees while the total number of staff at VTT ltd is close to 2500.
The MIKES building is situated in the city of Espoo and its branch office in Kajaani is the northernmost National Standards Laboratory in the world. The high-quality laboratories provide the most accurate measurements and calibrations – over 1600 certificates per year – in Finland. VTT MIKES also performs high-level metrological research and develops measuring applications in partnership with industry. The activities of VTT MIKES aim to improve industrial competitiveness, the national innovative environment, and public safety.
VTT MIKES is a signatory to the CIPM MRA (International Committee for Weights and Measures, Mutual Recognition Arrangement), which is the framework through which National Metrology Institutes demonstrate the international equivalence of their measurement standards and the calibration and measurement certificates they issue. VTT MIKES is a member of EURAMET e.V. (European Association of National Metrology Institutes). Through international collaboration, VTT MIKES is linked to the international measurement system and to the European and international metrology research community. VTT MIKES takes actively part in the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) and in the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR).
