The basis of MIKES activities

MIKES is a national metrology institute (NMI) and a national measurement standard laboratory. MIKES performs calibrations with the authority of legislation (1156/1993, 972/1994) and international agreements (Convention of the Metre, CIPM MRA, EURAMET) and not of accreditation. MIKES is at the highest level of measurements and calibration activities in Finland and among other things disseminates traceability to the accredited laboratories. MIKES has the authority to calibrate quantities with the accuracy it claims. MIKES confirms the correctness of its measurements by international comparisons and by in its calibration services following the quality system described in the standard SFS-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories).

MIKES calibration services are internationally evaluated and acknowledged. MIKES has signed the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA), which is an agreement between national metrology institutes. The CIPM MRA establishes the degree of equivalence of national measurement standards maintained by NMIs and provides for mutual recognition of calibration and measurement certificates issued by NMIs. As a member of the CIPM MRA arrangement MIKES has the authority to use the CIPM MRA logo in its calibration certificates issued for calibrations performed in the areas of qualification described in the so-called CMC tables (Calibration and Measurement Capabilities). More information on BIPM webpages.

MIKES calibrates its own measurement devices according to its own calibration instructions and measurement uncertainty calculations. The calibration instructions are based on international ISO standards, when such standards are available.
